The Triple Threat of Sciatica: How 3 Modern Habits Have Sparked a Lower Back Epidemic

Updated: Jul 30

Sciatica affects up to 40% of people at some point in their lives, with the most common symptom being pain that radiates from the lower back down through the legs. With such a significant portion of the population experiencing this condition (or chronic back and neck pain), I have decided to dedicate my time to studying this issue. To start, I think it is important to understand what I believe are 3 of the main modern habits that contribute to its prevalence.

1. Sitting in Sofas

“But I love my recliner!”

Unfortunately, one of the main culprits behind the rise in sciatica cases is our love affair with comfortable but poorly designed sofa chairs. These seats often encourage us to slouch or sink in, leading to poor posture that puts stress on the lower back and compresses the sciatic nerve. Spending hours in these positions can eventually lead to chronic pain and discomfort.

2. Devices

In our tech-driven world, we spend countless hours looking at screens, whether on computers, tablets, or smartphones. These devices often cause us to pitch our heads forward and down, straining the neck and upper back muscles. This strain creates imbalances that can impact the lower back and irritate the sciatic nerve, contributing to sciatica.

3. Core Training

Yes, you read that right—core training! While building core strength is useful, an overemphasis on exercises that involve constantly drawing the abdomen in can actually exacerbate sciatica. This practice reduces our lumbar curve, increasing stress on the lower back muscles, potentially leading to compression of the sciatic nerve. (More on core training in my next blog!)

The good news is that sciatica is reversible in most cases. With the right approach, including targeted movements, an emphasis on posture, and lifestyle adjustments, you can significantly reduce and even eliminate sciatic pain.

Join me next month in The Sciatica Program, as I expose popular trends that have worsened your pain and guide you on the correct path to recovery.
